Nature Has it’s Funny Ways

We’ve all heard about cats or dogs that act as a surrogate to orphaned kittens or puppies and sometimes even pigs or squirrels.  Often, a dog or cat who has just given birth will take on this young as if they were her own.

My dog, Keesha, recently decided to act as a surrogate mom for a group of ‘kittens’ who actually didn’t need a surrogate.  The mama cat had decided the kittens were done nursing.  But I guess the kitties hadn’t yet fulfilled their sucking needs and found that Keesha made a good replacement mom.  Keesha, who is spayed, and has never had puppies, willingly obliged to this group of cats.  No milk, but apparently maternal instinct still in her, she lets the young cats nurse.  They seek her out, push around to find just the right spot to nurse and paw her for milk just like they would their own mama.  Nature sure has its funny ways.

On a final note, I want to send a big thank you to the Central Nebraska Humane Society for allowing our family to adopt Keesha (f/k/a Bianca) from them in March of 2008.
